What Is Sleep Apnea?

A serious disorder that interrupts your breathing — and your health

Obstructive Sleep Apnea is a potentially serious sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly starts and stops as the throat muscles relax and block the upper airway. Patients can stop breathing hundreds of times a night, each time straining the heart and brain.

Left untreated, that constant strain — combined with poor sleep quality — can lead to dangerous complications including heart disease, stroke, mood disorders, and accidents from daytime drowsiness.

Struggling With CPAP?

You don’t have to choose between treatment and a good night’s sleep

Many patients are prescribed a CPAP machine — and quietly stop using it because it’s loud, bulky, or uncomfortable. The trouble is, a CPAP that sits in the closet can’t protect your health.

The new generation of custom oral appliances makes treatment something patients will actually wear, night after night. Small enough to fit in a carry-on and quiet enough for any bedroom, they keep your airway open without a mask, hose, or motor.

  • No mask, hose, or noise
  • Custom-fit for all-night comfort
  • Easy to travel with
  • A first-line option for mild-to-moderate OSA

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers about sleep apnea and oral appliance therapy. Have another question? Just ask us.

01What is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)?+

OSA is a sleep breathing disorder in which the tissues in the throat collapse and cut off the airway while you sleep — sometimes dozens or hundreds of times an hour. Each pause strains the heart and lowers oxygen, leading to fragmented, non-refreshing sleep and serious long-term health risks.

02Is an oral appliance a real alternative to CPAP?+

Yes. Custom oral appliances are a recognized first-line therapy for mild-to-moderate OSA, and a proven option for patients with severe OSA who cannot tolerate CPAP. Many patients who abandoned their CPAP find a small, quiet appliance far easier to wear every night.

03Who is at higher risk for sleep apnea?+

Risk factors include loud snoring, mouth breathing, a larger neck circumference, a family history of OSA, alcohol or sedative use before bed, smoking, and age over 40. Sleep apnea can affect anyone, however — even people who are thin.

04Does medical insurance cover oral appliance therapy?+

Many medical insurance companies provide benefits for snoring and sleep apnea treatment, including oral appliances. Our office has special training in preparing and delivering custom oral appliance therapy and will help you understand your coverage.

05How is sleep apnea diagnosed?+

Diagnosis is made through a sleep study. We refer all of our patients to Sliiip, where a board-certified sleep physician reviews your sleep and arranges a convenient home sleep test — diagnosed from the comfort of your own bed. The results determine which treatment option is best suited to you.
